Hi! Yes, it's true...today we officially announced that we are joining the UbiSoft family.

Quote:
UBISOFT® ACQUIRES REDLYNX,
CREATOR OF POPULAR DIGITAL BRAND “TRIALS”

Paris, France – November 02, 2011 – Today, Ubisoft announced that it has acquired RedLynx, the Finland-based creator of the renowned digital brand “Trials”.

Founded in 2000, RedLynx is a pioneer in digital games, developing more than 100 high-quality titles for a wide range of digital distribution channels, including PC, consoles, mobile phones, tablets and interactive TV. After initial success on PC and wide acclaim for its highly realistic, physics-based game mechanics, Trials, RedLynx’s flagship brand, has now become one of the best-selling games ever on Xbox™ LIVE Arcade, with over two million paid downloads across the main game and both DLCs. Trials Evolution, the next title in the franchise, will be released in the coming months. The recent DrawRace 2 for the iPhone and iPad was lauded by both press and gamers for its innovative physics-based touch-controls and asynchronous multiplayer gameplay. Upon its release, DrawRace2 became the best-selling racing game in both Europe and the United States.

Commenting on the acquisition, Yves Guillemot, chief executive officer at Ubisoft, stated: "The team at RedLynx has developed exceptionally strong digital brands that stand out for their high replay value, their long tail sales and their multiplatform positioning. We are delighted to welcome RedLynx to the Ubisoft family. Their expertise in asynchronous online games and physics-based game mechanics provides us with a great opportunity to bring their powerful brands, most notably Trials, to an even broader range of fast-growing digital platforms."

"We were attracted by Ubisoft’s focus on creativity and quality, and the fact that they base their long-term strategy on both the traditional and digital distribution video game markets. The reality of today’s market is not about platforms, it’s about creating excellent gaming experiences that consumers can play on any device or screen they like.” stated Tero Virtala, chief executive officer of RedLynx. “As part of the Ubisoft team, RedLynx will be able to focus even more intently on creating stand-out, excellent brands that push the boundaries of online gaming in many new growth areas. With Ubisoft, a wider audience will get the chance to enjoy our games, we‘llgenerate more value for our brands, and also leverage our experience more broadly in digital distribution channels."
Following the acquisitions of Massive Entertainment, Nadeo, Quazal and Owlient, RedLynx represents the continuation of Ubisoft’s focus on strengthening its online expertise and infrastructure in order to expand its portfolio and use of new online business models. The success of The Smurfs & Co social game on Facebook, the upcoming launch of the AAA project Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Online in open beta, the enthusiasm of the TrackMania community, the success of The Settlers Online in Germany and the Uplay online services platform are the most recent implementations of this digital strategy.
Previous Ubisoft acquisitions in the online segment:
- November 2008: acquisition of Massive Entertainment, renowned for their specialty in creating multiplayer games. Massive is collaborating on or responsible for the development of several ambitious unannounced projects.
- October 2009: acquisition of Nadeo, creator of cult hit multiplayer driving game, TrackMania. TrackMania 2 Canyon and ManiaPlanet has been recently released.
- November 2010: acquisition of Quazal, a leader in the creation of online technical solutions. Assassin’s Creed implements Quazal technology for its multiplayer mode, which received the Game Critics Award for "Best Online Game" at E3 2010.
- July 2011: acquisition of free-to-play game developer Owlient. The team at Owlient has extensive expertise in the management of online game-playing communities, and their Howrse brand has almost two million monthly active users.

I am slightly worried about this.

Ubisoft "bought" Redlynx (is that the correct term?)?

Does Redlynx retain it's independence with it's current games selection, or does Ubisoft claim rights to the IP? Isn't the Trials brand a partnership with Microsoft? How do these sort of things affect Redlynx as a company?

I just don't understand the ramifications of this on Redlynx as a company.

It means Redlynx has access to more money and resources, but the top decisions are no longer in there hands. It's like that with Microsoft and Rare. Microsoft bought Rare and ran them into the ground. Hopefully Ubisoft won't force Redlynx into Kinect-only games.

I can't say I'm excited about this. Bizarre moved to Activation and went under a short while later and I really hope this doesn't go the same way.
I have very little faith in Ubisoft going on previous experience with a number of their titles, so I have everything crossed that RedLynx won't succumb to early release pressure from a parent company and bodge their next game.
Question is, is this the reason why we have no release date for Trials yet?
For me it's a sad day. I can only see this community suffering as a result.
Sorry for being negative. I'm sure that for the studio this is great news so congratulations.

Hey guys! We're very excited about the support we'll get from Ubisoft for all our games and projects, going forward.

To answer a few questions, RedLynx will remain RedLynx, right here in Helsinki. Our website and forums will be right here, we value the Trials and RedLynx games community obviously and don't want to change.

Trials Evolution will be coming to Xbox LIVE Arcade, just as originally planned. This should not affect its release date, which we have not yet announced in any case. It will not suddenly become a retail game or anything like that.

We'll continue to support our other current games with new updates for DrawRace 2 and of course the one thousand days of content for 1000 Heroz.

As for an Ezio costume in Trials, yeah that'd be cool! But we haven't officially had the discussion yet, and we don't currently have a cape model in place. :)

So that's why Rayman was sitting right next to Evo at the London Expo

One of the event staff asked my mate if he wanted a go on it while he waited for Evo, I won't write his response here

I know it wasn't by design really, just thought it was funny man :D

How did this all come about, did Ubisoft approach RL or have RL been looking for a larger partner? When did the ball start rolling? If it's ok to ask about these things anyway.

Ubisoft is known for releasing titles across multiple consoles, will this acquisition help to get a Trials game (back) to PC and maybe PS3?

I think that people are really worried about Redlynx remaining the Redlynx that we all know. The dev interaction, suggestions that are not only read but are also taken into consideration. Seriously high quality games. When a flaw is found in a Redlynx game after it's release, there is a patch out for it (typically) within 2 weeks. You guys don't really PUSH your games out just to get money faster, the community here just wants to be sure that 99% of what they know here stays the same.

Ubisoft definitely has some extra resources and capital that would do nothing but help Redlynx, we just want you guys to stay the same.

PS: I knew something was up when Jorma, ANBA, sipe, Jenkki, and sebbbi were all browsing the forum.

I can't really address those myself, ANBA can if he likes, but we're setting up some press interviews that should hopefully sort out some of these questions in the next few days.

That's the only bit of information I took from you post. Having a new Trials game on PC would be amazing. Maybe their first assignment will be porting Evolution to other systems

I can't complain about this merge but I really hope that nothing bad comes of it. Like somebody else said about Microsoft and Rare, I'm hoping that Ubisoft doesn't destroy what makes RedLynx the awesome development team that they are. Also, does Ubisoft still use that annoying online DRM? I really hope that crap stays away from future RedLynx games, I can't stand not being able to play my games offline :|

Well I love what Ubisoft has done for games lately... AC, PoP, Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon, Rayman Raving Rabbids and Rainbo Six.

I'm sure that Redlynx got the better end of the deal!

I wish them the best and I welcome our new ubisoft overlords.

Business 101 - Make a company awesome enough to sell it off so you can invest on bigger and better things.

There is always a chance that things will go downhill, but in reality if this means Trials for everyone and them having more capital to create awesome retail games or just the possibility for them to try something they always wanted to do so but couldn't because they had to stick with what worked, I'm all for it.

Who knows maybe they always wanted to do an RPG or FPS haha!

Twisted Trials of War - Run around a city doing wild jumps and gun totting crazy kills.
